First held in 2009, the Queer Acts Theatre Festival is a five day LGBTQ+ theatre event held each summer during the first few days of the Halifax Pride Festival. With exceptional line-ups and as the only LGBTQ+ theatre festival in the Atlantic provinces, the event is extremely popular with audiences and performers alike. The festival’s goals are to showcase professional LGBTQ performance-art, provide artists with the necessary support to elevate their production values, and offer a forum for the growth of professional and emerging theatrical talent. Over the years, Queer Acts has showcased critically acclaimed works, fostered new relationships between theatre artists, facilitated formal and informal educational opportunities, and validated the experience of our LGBTQ+ community members by sharing their stories in a public forum.
In addition to the annual festival, Queer Acts also runs the Emerging Queer Artists Program, a play-reading series, queer slow-dances, and an annual comedy night of stand-up and storytelling by prominent members of the LGBTQ+ community.
